Unlike past productions that have drawn from various dances of Chinese dynasties or lives of royalty, this program will highlight the life of ordinary people. In our current day and age where no time is left to slow down and appreciate the beauty and joys of our lives around us, this program is intended to bring the simplicity as well as complexity of life into sharper focus.
Not only will the dances feature traditional work in Chinese lives, such as picking tea and catching fish but also the joys of family life. Children’s games, teenage romance, bridal preparations are just some of the subjects of the dances to be presented.
Under the artistic direction of Artistic Director Shen Pei. Shen Pei and Associate Artistic Director Qiang Yang have collaborated to bring more than 100 dancers to the stage for a two hour performance with dances from various ethnic Chinese groups as well as original choreography. Artistic Director Shen Pei says “We wanted to present something different for our Fall 2004 Production, and show another side of Chinese dance and culture, the rhythms of life. Even if someone is not familiar with Chinese culture, the rituals of everyday life will be easily appreciated through the language of dance.”
