UMTYMP-A Student’s Point of View
Herbert Spencer once said: “Education has for its object the formation of character.” No words have ever been so true. After three years in UMTYMP, the lessons I have learned have been countless; whether they are academic or personal.
If you had asked me about my work ethics three years ago, I wouldn’t even have known how to answer that. School had always been extremely easy, a walk through the park, if I may. I was a procrastinator because I knew that producing mediocre work at the last minute would still get me a good grade. Joining UMTYMP really gave a turnaround.
The discipline expected in UMTYMP is far greater than any provided in the normal confinements of an everyday classroom. From the beginning, we were informed that all scores and grades earned in UMTYMP would be done out of hard-work and persistence. The homework load is quite a burden the first year; but as you continue, the load lightens. Students are expected to complete their homework in both a proficient and efficient manner. This is probably one of the great character lessons taught in UMTYMP. Through our homework assignments, we not only learn the mathematical aspect, but also that procrastination and carelessness would be sure-routes to disaster. Being in UMTYMP has really changed my attitude towards learning. I have learned that hard work and persistence are the really valuable assets in life.
In UMTYMP, the curriculum is extremely concentrated. We learn things quickly and in depth. What may take an average math class one week to cover, we learn in one hour. Thus a lot of the work lies in the hands of the instructors. The teachers in UMTYMP are truly extraordinary. They have the ability to convey information in a way that not only is easily understood, but also interesting. Both the instructors and teaching assistants make the college experience of UMTYMP whole. Through them, we are able to see how classes operate at a university, and the intensity and level of discipline required there.
After learning about the curriculum, the high expectations, the wonderful teachers, you’re probably saying: “It doesn’t get much better than this.” Well, let me just tell you: it does. The most special part of UMTYMP is the fellow students. Finally, we are in an environment where everyone is thriving to learn. Each person is so intelligent and witty. The friendships made and kept in UMTYMP are sure to last a lifetime.
Most parents of UMTYMP students wonder if this program helps students taking the SAT test. The material covered in UMTYMP is much more difficult than the subjects tested in the SAT; however, UMTYMP does help to prepare students for the exam quite indirectly. UMTYMP teaches you to look more in depth and find hidden meanings in questions, no matter the type or level of the problem. This helps to eliminate chances of being careless, and it also gives you the discipline of being able to look at a math problem and immediately know the way that you’re going to solve it.
Although UMTYMP doesn’t directly benefit the enhancement of SAT scores, there are many other things that it does provide. For example, it gives a first-hand look at how a college or university course is structured. UMTYMP also looks great on a college application. Many schools like the UMTYMP program because it show them the students who are disciplined enough to stick with such an intense and difficult program, it also sorts out ‘la crème de la crème’(the best from the best) from all the students in the state.
For students who are thinking of joining UMTYMP: it is a wonderful program that will be an unforgettable experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.
